Shop Instyle: Lovely Little Parties

Sunday, June 5th, 2011

Plato is claimed to have realised that necessity is the mother invention.  And mother’s have many needs! Especially when it comes to stylish party planning.  Virginia Edward, owner of online store Lovely Little Parties decided to help out the cause and create a gorgeous little store to save mother’s everywhere.

Launched in October 2010, Virginia stocks several Kids Instyle exhibitors to curate her clever party collection. We hope to see her at Kids Instyle Melbourne, August 2011!

Tell us a little bit about your store and how it was established…
I had always wanted to start my own business and paper and party goods have been a great passion of mine. When planning my own children’s parties, I found a lot of cute items all over the place online, in the US and also in the handmade markets. I wanted to pull all of these items together in one place, and make some less accessible items more easily accessible here in Australia alongside lots of products I really liked. I love looking around for one of kind and fun party products to add to the store.

What sets your store apart from other stores?
Some of the unique products I sell as well as the customer service I provide. I aim to deliver orders to customers as quickly as possible and provide good communication throughout the whole process.

What are your favourite products in store right now?
My favourite products are not quite in the store yet (am nearly ready to pop them up online), but I have just received the stock. They are gorgeous Pretty Swell fabric flower garlands and co-ordinating cake toppers. They are beautifully handmade in Hawaii and I have had one set custom made to match the colour palette in the KatyJane Designs Whimsical Fairy invitations.

Do you attend Kids Instyle? If so, why?
I attended Kids Instyle as it is a great place to see a lot of stock all in one place, to be inspired by great products, and to find products and suppliers that you might not have otherwise found. I love the quality of products that are on show at this fair too.

What do you look for in products when selecting stock for your store?
I like to stock products that I personally like myself. I am particularly drawn to products that are simple and basic and that allow customers to be creative and add their own spin to them so they can create a unique party. I also like to try and stock some products that are not readily available elsewhere and that are of a good design. If I can find products that tick those boxes and they are also supportive of the handmade or independent markets, even better!

What has been the biggest surprise/achievement since opening your store?
The biggest surprise has been the amount of reach and recognition I’ve received from stylists and also the bridal industry. I went into this mainly with the idea of targeting adults organising children’s parties and hadn’t really thought about the brides! It’s definitely a welcome surprise and another part of the market I’m happy to provide a service to!

Instyle: Angela Smith, Rube & Harri

Sunday, January 23rd, 2011

If you have children, you will know how difficult it is to buy them comfy, stylish sleepwear that isn’t covered in the latest Disney movie character. Enter Rube & Harri, a new children’s sleepwear label created by very busy mum of three, Angela Smith. Exhibiting for the first time in Sydney, Angela’s pjs bring a level of design to sleep gear normally reserved for much older snoozers.  But as Angela points out “Children are at their most beautiful when sleeping – so it’s only fitting that they should be dressed in beautiful pyjamas!”  Here, here we say.

Legs

Here’s more of Angela’s story of how she went from law to designer in the land of nod…

How did you end up where you are today?
After leaving school I worked full time in law as a paralegal in family law for approximately 10 years (both in Australian and London for a short period). I also I studied law for 2 years during that time only to discover Law was not the career for me – my creativity was somewhat restricted!! I studied Interior Design for a short period of time however due to my location I could not pursue further studies in that area without relocating.

Prior to starting out Rube & Harri, I spent 2 ½ years having my first two children, Ruby & Harriet, and at the same time carrying out research and development to get Rube & Harri up and running. I am also in business with my husband Bronte in another manufacturing business – producing leather care, hand cream and other products sold throughout Australia. So prior to Rube & Harri (and when I can now) I am in the shed helping with the “potting up” and labeling prior to dispatch. Until recently I also was the accountant for both businesses….way too much to handle now, particularly now that I have Hugo (6 mths).

When my daughter Ruby (now 5) was about 12 mths of age I tried to find classic cotton print pyjamas for her. I didn’t want licenced pyjamas with logos and brash colours splashed all over them. I searched in vain and could not find what I wanted – something that was stylish, cool and comfortable for the little people in our lives. Sleepwear they would not want to take off. I spoke to friends experiencing the same frustrations. I then did some research for about 12 months to confirm that a product like ours was not out on the market in Australia. After 3 years of research and development we launched in November 2009. We initially launched on the basis of selling exclusively on our own online store only to have several retail enquiries. Within 12 months we have 12 stockists.

Group

What’s the best thing about what you do?
I love what I do, working with patterns, print designs, children and being able to work in the comfort of my own home with my three children and husband close by.

Why did you decide to exhibit at Kids Instyle
Due to retailer demand, we have decided to expand into retail stores (not just our own online store). There is also demand from some customers to be able to see and feel our products and to be able to order in stores not just online. We would like to offer that to our customers. We also believe our product is a beautiful quality and unique product and would like to get the word out there to as many people as possible so they don’t missing out on owning/buying from our range. To make it more accessible for all.

What can we expect from you in Sydney?
I will be taking our Spring/Summer 2011 range with us in February. Classic styles, vibrant print designs and colours and 100% cotton – stylish, cool and comfortable.

girl-boy

Right now I’m:… Working late on my Spring designs…fit samples, construction details, print designs….and
Eating… a Guylian chocolate (or two or three!!).
Drinking… Strong Twinings English Breakfast tea and a chilled water
Reading… Your email and ones from my graphic artist/designer, agent, manufacturer and many more.
Hearing… Nothing other than the keyboard strokes – my children and husband are tucked up in bed sleeping soundly….if only I was too – the life of a work at home business owning mother!
Planning… Production timelines, KIS and a holiday somewhere to the beach with the family. Ahhhh – oh how I long for the beach break. Sun, surf, seafood and wine and most importantly lots of time to play with my children and enjoy my husband’s company. Long mornings at the beach.
Buying… Pretty dresses, flower hairclips and sparkly shoes for my daughters to where to their little brother’s christening.
Enjoying… crossing things off my list – my most productive part of the day begins in the evening at around 8pm.

Instyle: Matthew Harris, Telegram Paper Goods

Sunday, January 16th, 2011

Stationery can be addictive. For those of us who embrace the thrill of the written word, the hunt for the perfect pen, the oh-so-right notebook or the quirky accessory to brighten our desk can drive many of us to distraction. But for the chaps at Telegram Paper Goods it lead to a whole new life, creating and building a thriving stationery wholesaling business.  First debuting with Life Instyle in 2008, Matthew Harris, Managing Director, Telegram Paper Goods will be back at Life Instyle with an even bigger and more distracting array of products for stationery fiends everywhere to enjoy.  We pinned him down a few weeks back to see what he was up to in the lead up to the Sydney show.

city-stamps

How did you end up where you are today? Myself and my business partner Scott Druce were managing a store on Queen Street called The Source, and saw the interest people had in the small selection of quality design stationery we stocked. We contacted a few of our favourite labels in France and Korea, and set up a distribution for them to other stores. Less than two years later we’re stocking 16 labels to 300 stores around Australia. It’s been a little crazy…!

What’s the best thing about what you do?
Getting to travel around Australia and around the world, meeting both inspired retailers and stationery designers from Brisbane to Seoul to Paris and everywhere in between.

forever-card
Why do you exhibit at LIS/KIS? It’s Australia’s most relevant trade fair for what we do. People are here because they have an interest the things we’re interested in.

card-stamp
What has been your LIS/KIS highlight?
The enthusiastic responses from everyone when they see the wonderful new ranges that we spending so much time sourcing and collecting.

What can we expect from you at the next show?
Among new stock from most of our favourite designers, we’re giving Korean label MMMG their own stand. They’ve just released a ton of new stock, and their collections have been some of our most popular to date!

Right now I’m:
Eating….
Quesadillas at Mamasita whenever I can…
Drinking…
Endless cups of tea – I’m English after all.
Reading…
What the dog saw by Malcolm Gladwell.
Hearing…
I won’t reveal how tragic my taste in music is :)
Planning… To  take a holiday – after the next Life Instyle!
Buying… Far too many new product ranges… We’ve just had to move into a larger warehouse as our old one was literally bursting.
Enjoying… Developing close working relationships with soe of our favourite suppliers… We’re now collaborating on bespoke products for the Australian market which is a great development for us.

Instyle: Sarah Gibson, DesignByThem

Sunday, December 12th, 2010

DesignByThem is a young and vibrant design studio based in Sydney, and ‘them’ is Australian duo Nicholas Karlovasitis and Sarah Gibson. Together they create designs that are clean, experimental and combine a sense of fun with clear-cut function – their corrugated steel fruit bowl (below) a case in point.

fruitbowlCorro Bowl is made from corrugated steel, a material synonymous with the rural Australian landscape and modern Australian architecture. The bowl transforms this iconic material, accentuating its inherent strength and fluidity. Corro bowl can be used as either a fruit bowl or table centre piece. The corrugations form ideal troughs for nesting fruit.

All of their products reflect their understanding of ecodesign (which they also teach at university), as well as their commitment to local manufacturing, producing all of their products in Australia. As Sarah explains “We are passionate about Australian design and manufacturing. We believe in fostering strong collaborations within like minded people in the design, manufacturing and retail sectors.”

yellowstool

Butter stool is created from 100% post consumer recycled content, derived almost entirely from recycled milk containers. It is made from a single piece of material which when folded together can be hand assembled. The stool is stackable, comes in a large variety of colours and is suitable for indoor and outdoor use.

Exhibiting at Life Instyle in Sydney 2011 for the first time, buyers will be treated to a wide range of mainly interior products, including accessories, homewares, furniture and lighting.  Packed with innovative design, green cred and industrial strength design savvy, DesignbyThem is not to be missed.

treeling

Treeling is an earring tree inspired by the Japanese bonsai. Treeling accommodates for both pendant and stud style earrings, allowing the user to display their jewelry beautifully and easily

Read on for a bit more of the DesignbyThem story…

LIS: How did you end up where you are today?
Sarah: Nick and I started DesignByThem in 2006 after graduating from Industrial Design at the University of Technology Sydney. We observed that many designers were chasing big design brands overseas and we wanted to create a platform in Australia where like minded designers could come together and produce work in a professional and commercially focused environment.

redletterbox

Inspired by the Australian suburban landscape, TomTom reflects the desire of homeowners to differentiate and customize their home on the streetscape. Made from powder-coated Zincalume, the TomTom is highly rust-resistant and uses Nylon pivots for smooth opening.

LIS: What’s the best thing about what you do?
Sarah: It would probably be all of the great people we have met. We particularly like meeting our manufactures, who in many ways are distant from the design scene but who are vital for us to create innovative and quality pieces. We’ve also met some great designers, retailers and people from design magazines that are just as passionate about design as we are.

posyholder

Posy Vase plays with the tradition of giving flowers. The vase replaces the flower wrapping allowing for the flowers to be displayed as presented. The vase rests facing the user whilst neatly framing the flowers.

Right now I’m:

Eating… All things green, spring is the perfect season for this! I also enjoy amazing Greek feasts at my partner Nick’s parent’s house – just amazing!
Drinking… Good coffee in our studio, and great vodka lime cocktails on the weekends and loving Pinot Grigio with food.
Reading… The Brain that Changes Itself – an amazing book about Neuro plasticity. Read it, it’s incredible!
Hearing… Very mixed… Fleetwood Mac, Calvin Harris, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and J.J. Cale
Planning… A big innovation and planning board in our studio, very exiting! We’ve got a million different ideas, so we’re looking forward to having a single area to display them all. In terms of up coming products, we have some great new collaborations with other Australian designers on the way, including a candle block designed by some young architects from Sydney – Stewart Hollenstein. Our most recent collaboration was the TomTom Letterbox – see attached – designed in collaboration with Tommy Cehak.
Buying… Not much really, other than herbs for my balcony. We’re crazy busy at the moment in the lead up to Christmas, but if I had time, I’d probably be buying some bike accessories. But really, I should be buying Christmas presents, if only I was that organised!
Enjoying… The spring whether and daylight saving. Great evenings out eating great food with good friends.
