TOP PICK: Little Mouse Brown by Renee Lee

Sunday, June 19th, 2011

Exciting news for kids clothing buyers – stylish tween clothing has finally arrived thanks award-winning Brisbane fashion designer Renee Lee and her label Little Mouse Brown.

spotdress

You may remember Renee as one half of the successful Arsparella label, alongside fellow NRL football ‘WAG’ Tara Sailor. The pair formed Arsparella in 2003 with a view to producing stylish and comfortable womenswear. They went on to win an RAQ Fashion Design Award (Lifestyle category) in their first year together and backed up to take the title again the following year.

Renee took a break from the fashion industry in 2005 to focus on her family and help her husband, ex-Brisbane Bronco Phil Lee, with his building company.  However, the lure of fashion design was too strong and so, with her three children as inspiration, Renee launched Little Mouse Brown late last year.

“I always thought I’d get back into my own label when my children were old enough. My youngest daughter started school this year so I really felt ready,” Renee said. “I’m a creative person and I’m energized when I’m designing.”

Little Mouse Brown is a “modern vintage” range of clothing for tweens (children aged 8-12 years, in sizes 8-14). Renee noticed a substantial hole in the market for stylish, timeless and comfortable clothing for children in this age group while shopping for her very own tweens – daughter Indee and son Riley.

She initially went to market with a girls-only range for Autumn/Winter ’11. Renee said the response was “amazing” and so, with the support and encouragement of her customers and retailers, she unveiled her Spring/Summer ’11 collection last month – with the addition of a boys’ range too.

Renee’s collections for tweens recognises that tweens aren’t cutesy kids anymore, but they are still too young to be dressing in typical teenager garb.

“Kids are exposed to so much more than we were and you can see how it is easy for them to grow up too quickly,” Renee said. “My designs are created under the belief that children should dress like children.”

In Style: Lauren Boyce, Basil Bangs

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

Lauren Boyce is one half of the very clever luxury sun umbrella company Basil Bangs. Along with business partner Mike Durante, she’ll be bringing Basil and his bangin’ beach brollies to Life Instyle Melbourne 2011, where they’ll be launching their entire Summer 11/12 Collection and revealing an exciting collaboration!  We caught up with Lauren recently to find out how Basil was born and how he’s growing up…

CarolineSeabreeze_Sideview

Tell us about your products:
Our products, luxury sun umbrellas suitable for the outdoor area, pool and beach side, are a nod to the vintage designs of yesteryear. A modern take on the beautiful classic sun umbrella that featured heavily throughout the summers of the sixties and seventies. Think – Poolside with Slim Aarons

What’s behind the name?
Basil Bangs is kind of like a combined alter ego of the two of us and is always present. In everything that we create and all decisions that we make, we consider whether it’s something Basil Bangs would be in to. This one question really helps us in making all the big decisions because Basil knows best.

How did you end up where you are today?
I think a big part of developing a brand is being willing to take a chance. Our business was started by old friends who were willing to take that chance and combine their skills and knowledge to form Basil Bangs.

We had very different careers and backgrounds, mine in Digital Advertising and Mike, the other half of Basil Bangs and also the clever Design Director, was an Industrial Designer so it was a good combination. We were both in a position whereby we were able to sit down and agree that we wanted to design a range of class leading products. We had discussed over the years an admiration for the beach umbrella of years gone by, the type found in the back of many garages and old vintage markets. We knew there were a handful of brands out there doing umbrellas but we wanted to create our version of the perfect sun umbrella. So we started the process and it all happened pretty quickly from there.

LePixel_Canopy

What’s the best thing about what you do?
I like the possibilities that come with developing each collection & one of my favourite moments is receiving the sample and seeing how the design has translated from concept to prototype. No matter what the outcome, it just feels good to see it all come to life. The other thing is the ongoing challenge that comes with running a business. You never know what the day might bring and there is certainly no routine to it all so it constantly keeps you on your toes and there is never a dull moment with loads to learn.

Why do you decide to start exhibiting at Life Instyle?
From the day we decided to start Basil Bangs we knew we wanted to exhibit at Life InStyle eventually. We had both been to the tradeshow for one reason or another in previous years and were impressed with the high level of design and overall quality of the show. We saw it as an opportunity to showcase our products in a unique setting amongst fellow designers while directly reaching our target audience. It was a no brainer really! We’re both really looking forward to all the possibilities that goes with exhibiting at an event such as this.

What can we expect from you at the show?
We’ll be expanding our collection and this is the first time we’ll be showcasing it all together, so it will be the launch of the complete Summer 11/12 Collection. This year there are some beautiful woven fabrics from Germany and Italy and we’ve also got an exciting collaboration up our sleeve so there is much to reveal come August.

Right now I’m:

Eating…. Lots of fresh produce and treats from the new farmers market that just started up every Saturday morning at the local school grounds just down the road. It’s a good Saturday morning sampling all the goodness, catching up with friends and stocking up for the weekends festivities.

Drinking… Coffee from my favourite coffee shop in Bondi, Bru, and the occasional glass of red, warms the soul!

Reading… I have recently being splurging on interior & renovation magazines of all kinds because we’re planning a solid home renovation later this year. My absolute favourites at the moment are Inside Out and Real Living. Lots of inspiration in there for both the home and Basil. I also read Sarah Wilson’s and Table Tonic’s blog daily, such ideas and wisdom to be had from these two ladies.

Hearing… Lately I have been listening to Stereomood. It’s a cool little website offering a whole bunch of superbly curated playlists that you can play to suit whatever activity or mood you’re in. My favourite playlists are titled Dinner with Friends and Summer. The categories are endless and it features some amazing artists including lots from one of my faves Serge Gainsbourg. It’s a good mix for the office.Calypso_Sideview

Planning… On the work front it’s all about our new summer collection, product shoots and of course, Life InStyle planning. On the home front..my wedding : )

Buying… I am in the market for a good quality stove top espresso maker. I have been doing my research and I am just about the make the purchase. I always like to look at all the options first.

Enjoying… All of the food & wining with friends that Winter brings, weekend getaways down the South Coast & my morning walks with my little dog, Alfie…he is the best.

Shop Instyle: Lovely Little Parties

Sunday, June 5th, 2011

Plato is claimed to have realised that necessity is the mother invention.  And mother’s have many needs! Especially when it comes to stylish party planning.  Virginia Edward, owner of online store Lovely Little Parties decided to help out the cause and create a gorgeous little store to save mother’s everywhere.

Launched in October 2010, Virginia stocks several Kids Instyle exhibitors to curate her clever party collection. We hope to see her at Kids Instyle Melbourne, August 2011!

Tell us a little bit about your store and how it was established…
I had always wanted to start my own business and paper and party goods have been a great passion of mine. When planning my own children’s parties, I found a lot of cute items all over the place online, in the US and also in the handmade markets. I wanted to pull all of these items together in one place, and make some less accessible items more easily accessible here in Australia alongside lots of products I really liked. I love looking around for one of kind and fun party products to add to the store.

What sets your store apart from other stores?
Some of the unique products I sell as well as the customer service I provide. I aim to deliver orders to customers as quickly as possible and provide good communication throughout the whole process.

pinwheels

What are your favourite products in store right now?
My favourite products are not quite in the store yet (am nearly ready to pop them up online), but I have just received the stock. They are gorgeous Pretty Swell fabric flower garlands and co-ordinating cake toppers. They are beautifully handmade in Hawaii and I have had one set custom made to match the colour palette in the KatyJane Designs Whimsical Fairy invitations.

Do you attend Kids Instyle? If so, why?
I attended Kids Instyle as it is a great place to see a lot of stock all in one place, to be inspired by great products, and to find products and suppliers that you might not have otherwise found. I love the quality of products that are on show at this fair too.

What do you look for in products when selecting stock for your store?
I like to stock products that I personally like myself. I am particularly drawn to products that are simple and basic and that allow customers to be creative and add their own spin to them so they can create a unique party. I also like to try and stock some products that are not readily available elsewhere and that are of a good design. If I can find products that tick those boxes and they are also supportive of the handmade or independent markets, even better!

popcorn

What has been the biggest surprise/achievement since opening your store?
The biggest surprise has been the amount of reach and recognition I’ve received from stylists and also the bridal industry. I went into this mainly with the idea of targeting adults organising children’s parties and hadn’t really thought about the brides! It’s definitely a welcome surprise and another part of the market I’m happy to provide a service to!

kjd_fairy_inviteset

Right now I’m: …relishing a quiet end to a quiet and relaxing day spent with friends while I left my four and two year old home with dad. Bliss!
Eating… leftover vanilla cheesecake from weekend festivities
Drinking… water (I wish it was a wine but I’m 15 weeks pregnant!)
Reading… emails! That’s all I have time for with two small children!
Hearing… the quiet of two children asleep
Planning… what to buy my mum for her birthday in June
Buying… exciting new products for Lovely Little Parties
Enjoying… a happy family life
