Instyle: Natasha Skunca, Make Me Iconic

Sunday, January 30th, 2011

If you didn’t catch Make Me Iconic in Melbourne last August, you’re in a for a treat when you come to Life Instyle Sydney.  Using the best emerging local design talent and capital city icons, Natasha Skunca has fashioned a range of homewares any worker’s cottage, Californian bungalow or Victorian terrace would be proud to adorn. And just as the Sydney vs. Melbourne debate never goes out of fashion, neither will these classic Australian designs.

Natasha gives us the skinny on the making of her very own icons…

How did you end up where you are today?
It all started with an idea…well two actually. We returned home to Melbourne in 2008 after an extended (10 year!) stay in Europe. Immediately we fell in love with the city again. How could you not? The city has so much to offer that is unique, stylish and contemporary we wanted something in our home that brought those elements to life. Sadly, there was nothing to be found. We had great souvenirs from London, but nothing to represent Melbourne – the city we grew up in and once again call home.

We knew we weren’t the only ones that love this city and guessed that we weren’t the only ones that wanted to take a part of it home. So the seed was sewn. We would find the best young, local designers to help us represent some of the unsung icons of the city. We knew what the icons were but didn’t know much about their history. So we decided to educate ourselves and our customers about the history of each icon and give them facts about what makes the icons unique.

So with unsung icons and urban education in mind – Make Me Iconic was born, launching our first range of products in December 2009.

What’s the best thing about what you do?
Working with some great local talent to create some of the iconic designs that we have. I love the creative part of coming up with an idea for a design, writing the brief and then seeing the young designers work their magic. It’s so good to then see a finished product and of course hearing our customers reactions when they fall in love with it too.

Why do you exhibit at Life Instyle?
It’s great to be part of something so exciting and great to be able to meet people in the industry. It so wonderful to great such great feedback from our customers and talk face to face with people about who we are what we do.

What has been your Life Instyle highlight so far?
When we did our first Melbourne Life Instyle and we were filmed and put up on the blog. It was great exposure and but also made me feel like a movie star being interviewed by a film crew. My five minutes of fame!

What can we expect from you at the next show?
This show we have some new products coming up and some new designs. We have the entire Sydney range ready to go and to get out into stores.

Right now I’m:
Eating… It’s a bit naughty but I have just had my fourth Tim Tam for the day. You can never stop at just one!
Drinking… Some cool apple juice at the moment but looking forward to a glass of wine with a girlfriend later on this evening.
Reading… Downtown Chic by Robert & Cortney Novogratz. They have some amazing pictures of somes of the house in NY which they have revamped and very inspirational.
Hearing… Listing to my old U2 CD’s all over again. Still blown-away when they were here in December and realised I don’t listen to CD’s anymore, it’s just iPods and iPhones these days.
Planning… Our stand for Sydney and some new products. There is never enough time in the day.
Buying… Some vintage desk organisers from an antique dealer. You can never have enough stuff to organise your desk.
Enjoying… Finally some hot weather in Melbourne. This summer has reminded me of the overcast and rainy summers you get in London.

Once billycart driver. Sometime graphic designer. Now mumpreneur extraordinaire. Meet Samantha Peters and her brand Little Chipipi. Although… you probably don’t need an introduction and are already well aware of her ‘MOVEables’ wall stickers and gorgeous gift cards.

Apparently Sam has a few more surprises for us at the show! We can’t wait! In the meantime, you can get to know her a little better here…

How did you end up where you are today?
I have always loved being creative. After years of university study and work in the graphic design industry, I took a break to have my beautiful son. Then, like so many other mum’s before me, I felt the need to create again. I started decorating the nursery by designing canvas artworks and Little Chipipi was born (pronounced Ch-pee-pee – a name we gave to a billy cart my Grandpa made).

Realising their popularity, I sold the canvases to some local shops and markets. A natural progression was to put the canvas designs onto greeting cards and fridge magnets. This expanded the market and the designs took off.

However, it was with the development of our popular ‘Moveables’ range of wall stickers that we were able to make a big impact and propel Little Chipipi into the wholesale market. We started exhibiting at trade fairs. That was five years ago and we haven’t taken a breath since.

What’s the best thing about what you do?
I really like the diversity and challenges that Little Chipipi brings and to see the products evolve from a concept through to completion. I also love the multi tasking aspect – from working with children on photo shoots to liaising with clients at trade fairs. It keeps the job varied and stimulating.

When did you start exhibiting at Kids Instyle?
Our first trade fair was Sydney 2008, this will be our 7th Kids Instyle which we are very excited about!

Why do you exhibit at Kids Instyle?
Life Instyle represents similar values to Little Chipipi so was the most appropriate fit for us. Life Instyle created an event that is high quality/classy, progressive and unique. It is also the boutique environment and the relaxed atmosphere that ultimately attracted the right retailers for us.

What has been your Kid Instyle highlight?
Hard to pick one, but definitely the inspiration you get from being surrounded by so many talented people. I also love the excitement of the bump-in and the launch of something new on opening day.

What can we expect from you at the next show?
We recently launched into stores our brand new Organic Baby infant bedding. This is our first opportunity to show the range at a Sydney Life Instyle so I expect it will be new to many retailers. We have also extended on the Organic bedding range – a few more surprises to be launched at this show.

Bali can do strange things to people. It can put you in a different frame of mind, provide an alternative way of seeing the world and bring forth new opportunities.  Rag trade veteran Anna Cerritelli felt the shift on her visit in 2006, and a new jewellery business was born. Cerri is her latest venture, adding to a creative career spanning over 30 years. Cerri will bring some sparkle to Life Instyle in Sydney 17-20 February.

Cerri features two jewellery collections:  ARGENTO (Italian for  silver) is jewellery that is high quality, beautifully handcrafted original in design featuring a variety of  interesting gemstones, coral, pearls, lavastone, wood, bone, horn & leather.  MAJA is fun, ontrend jewellery, made mostly in metal or bronze with silver and gold plating.

Read Anna’s gorgeous story here:

How did you end up where you are today?
I studied fashion design at Emily McPherson College in the mid 70’s and have a diploma in fashion design and began my first job as a junior designer with Jag Jeans.  I next had a boutique for 5 years stocking local and overseas upmarket designer brands and occasionally would create my own designs .. mostly after five.  I sold the business when my first daughter, Talia, who is my model on the website, was born in 1982 .

I then began freelance designing in the industry in ladies and kids wear.  I began a kids wear business with my best friend Maree who was also a designer in mid 80’s. Our brand was called KOO WEE. But after baby number 3 came along in ‘88, I gave in to the motherly duties for a while.

Cerri jewellery

In 1992 went back to study at RMIT  and acquired another Diploma in Marketing and Merchandising. which eventually led me back into the industry as a product developer.  I started working for suppliers to major department stores, designing anything from kids wear to eventually sleepwear, intimate apparel and resort wear for Sussan.

In 2006 after a trip to Bali with my girlfriend I fell in love with the idea of importing jewellery. So I started to source suppliers who could make up my designs, and so it was in 2007 that I heard about Life Instyle and remember making a phone call to book a stand.  I was in luck, someone had broken a leg and there was one stand left so I took it.  They asked “ can you get it together in 2 weeks” and I replied “I will make it happen” and so it did.

What’s the best thing about what you do?
I love having my own business and being able to create a product, show it to retailers from all over the place and definitely get a buzz from seeing the product sell and seeing it in stores.   It is a process that keeps me going and inspired to keep creating and coming up with more designs.  It is also wonderful to see my product in the last six months in so many fab magazines. We have had amazing publicity and this gives me the confidence to keep going.

Cerri jewellery

Why do you exhibit at Life Instyle?
Life Instyle has an ambiance that is not offered by other exhibitions … it oozes quality, creativity and good design in every way.  Everyone at Life Instyle is creative and has a good sense of design whether they be the actual designer exhibiting their own creative product or they be an agent or importer of other designer brands.  I have met lovely people and made some great friends through Life Instyle – this makes it an enjoyable experience – hard work but worthwhile.

What has been your Life Instyle highlight?
I guess the highlight for me was when the CEO and Accessories manager for Witchery walked past my stand in Sydney in 2009.  He was walking by with a mutual friend and we began to chat and this led to me meeting up with the Jewellery Buyer and this was how I started to produce jewellery for Witchery.  This of course was not my Cerri product, but it gave my business a big boost in the early years.  I was also really delighted to meet the buyer from Husk at the time, Suzi Stanford walking casually into my stand and I didn’t know who she was … she was eating a sandwich … quietly looking at my jewellery and then handed me a card and asked me to call her after the trade fair.  The other highlight was when the gorgeous Australian designer Fleur Wood placed an order …  she is one of my favourite and best customers to date.  Again I didn’t know who she was … she was very quiet and just looking at the jewellery and when I approached her she introduced herself and I was honored to know that a well established Australian designer was interested to have my jeweller in her stores.

What can we expect from you at the next show?
I am planning to show some really fun silver pieces, more colour and some fantastic new horn designs.  I am here in Bali now finalizing the details: gorgeous agate earrings coming up – they are really fun and stunning colours of green, blue and mocca shades.  I also have a possible surprise – have been thinking about introducing bags and am seeing suppliers right now. With a bit of luck we may have some bags to launch in Sydney.

Anna for Cerri, Life Instyle, Sydney www.lifeinstyle.com.au

Right now I’m… I am in Bali staying at an Italian friend’s villa in Seminyak. Last night I met a friend of his from Rome who also lives in Bali 6 months of the year and 6 months in New York and Rome.  I love being here. It is always fascinating and I love meeting new people from all parts of the world, all centered in this little island – all creative and so interesting to hear about their lives and work.  We sat around last night talking about life, relationships, divorce, marriage.  Dinner was delivered and they had a super thin margherita pizza with fresh basil. Yum. We finished the bottle of Pierro wine which I bought on the way out of Australia and I had a grilled snapper which only cost me 80,000 IDR … ten Aussie dollars. Amazing.

Reading… I am currently reading my friend’s book .. called Forty Something by Pasquale Palmieri.

Hearing… Tranquility and Peace of Bali … nothing but the occasional ghekko and the pool water flowing.

Planning… I am here in Bali to expand my business further and meeting different suppliers of leather bags and possibly introduce some fashion.

Buying… Looking at accessories here … other designers jewellery and accessories and fashion … and thinking of buying a villa here so can spend more time here relaxing, unwinding and being inspired  to create new product.

Enjoying… Meeting new people, discovering new places .. the most recent place here that has opened is called Cocoon… amazing  place that looks like a  Collosseum with the external walls made up of a  jigsaw of colourful Javanese shutters. Bali never ceases to amaze me… always something or someone new…

Instyle: Angela Smith, Rube & Harri

Sunday, January 23rd, 2011

If you have children, you will know how difficult it is to buy them comfy, stylish sleepwear that isn’t covered in the latest Disney movie character. Enter Rube & Harri, a new children’s sleepwear label created by very busy mum of three, Angela Smith. Exhibiting for the first time in Sydney, Angela’s pjs bring a level of design to sleep gear normally reserved for much older snoozers.  But as Angela points out “Children are at their most beautiful when sleeping – so it’s only fitting that they should be dressed in beautiful pyjamas!”  Here, here we say.

Legs

Here’s more of Angela’s story of how she went from law to designer in the land of nod…

How did you end up where you are today?
After leaving school I worked full time in law as a paralegal in family law for approximately 10 years (both in Australian and London for a short period). I also I studied law for 2 years during that time only to discover Law was not the career for me – my creativity was somewhat restricted!! I studied Interior Design for a short period of time however due to my location I could not pursue further studies in that area without relocating.

Prior to starting out Rube & Harri, I spent 2 ½ years having my first two children, Ruby & Harriet, and at the same time carrying out research and development to get Rube & Harri up and running. I am also in business with my husband Bronte in another manufacturing business – producing leather care, hand cream and other products sold throughout Australia. So prior to Rube & Harri (and when I can now) I am in the shed helping with the “potting up” and labeling prior to dispatch. Until recently I also was the accountant for both businesses….way too much to handle now, particularly now that I have Hugo (6 mths).

When my daughter Ruby (now 5) was about 12 mths of age I tried to find classic cotton print pyjamas for her. I didn’t want licenced pyjamas with logos and brash colours splashed all over them. I searched in vain and could not find what I wanted – something that was stylish, cool and comfortable for the little people in our lives. Sleepwear they would not want to take off. I spoke to friends experiencing the same frustrations. I then did some research for about 12 months to confirm that a product like ours was not out on the market in Australia. After 3 years of research and development we launched in November 2009. We initially launched on the basis of selling exclusively on our own online store only to have several retail enquiries. Within 12 months we have 12 stockists.

Group

What’s the best thing about what you do?
I love what I do, working with patterns, print designs, children and being able to work in the comfort of my own home with my three children and husband close by.

Why did you decide to exhibit at Kids Instyle
Due to retailer demand, we have decided to expand into retail stores (not just our own online store). There is also demand from some customers to be able to see and feel our products and to be able to order in stores not just online. We would like to offer that to our customers. We also believe our product is a beautiful quality and unique product and would like to get the word out there to as many people as possible so they don’t missing out on owning/buying from our range. To make it more accessible for all.

What can we expect from you in Sydney?
I will be taking our Spring/Summer 2011 range with us in February. Classic styles, vibrant print designs and colours and 100% cotton – stylish, cool and comfortable.

girl-boy

Right now I’m:… Working late on my Spring designs…fit samples, construction details, print designs….and
Eating… a Guylian chocolate (or two or three!!).
Drinking… Strong Twinings English Breakfast tea and a chilled water
Reading… Your email and ones from my graphic artist/designer, agent, manufacturer and many more.
Hearing… Nothing other than the keyboard strokes – my children and husband are tucked up in bed sleeping soundly….if only I was too – the life of a work at home business owning mother!
Planning… Production timelines, KIS and a holiday somewhere to the beach with the family. Ahhhh – oh how I long for the beach break. Sun, surf, seafood and wine and most importantly lots of time to play with my children and enjoy my husband’s company. Long mornings at the beach.
Buying… Pretty dresses, flower hairclips and sparkly shoes for my daughters to where to their little brother’s christening.
Enjoying… crossing things off my list – my most productive part of the day begins in the evening at around 8pm.

Stationery can be addictive. For those of us who embrace the thrill of the written word, the hunt for the perfect pen, the oh-so-right notebook or the quirky accessory to brighten our desk can drive many of us to distraction. But for the chaps at Telegram Paper Goods it lead to a whole new life, creating and building a thriving stationery wholesaling business.  First debuting with Life Instyle in 2008, Matthew Harris, Managing Director, Telegram Paper Goods will be back at Life Instyle with an even bigger and more distracting array of products for stationery fiends everywhere to enjoy.  We pinned him down a few weeks back to see what he was up to in the lead up to the Sydney show.

city-stamps

How did you end up where you are today? Myself and my business partner Scott Druce were managing a store on Queen Street called The Source, and saw the interest people had in the small selection of quality design stationery we stocked. We contacted a few of our favourite labels in France and Korea, and set up a distribution for them to other stores. Less than two years later we’re stocking 16 labels to 300 stores around Australia. It’s been a little crazy…!

Wendy Coombes and her business Tulp Kids will bring international award winning children’s furniture to Kids Instyle in Sydney this February – now that’s an exciting start to 2011!

Tulp Kids represents two European brands. The first is  Kast Van Een Huis (Netherlands) is a colourful storage solution (as well as room divider) shaped like Dutch Canal Houses for kids. The product won the 2010 Prix Decouverte at Maison & Objet in Paris.

houses
The second brand is Madrid-based NinetoNine. The philosophy NinetoNine is that products should be beautiful, creative, versatile, long lasting, and, of course, safe and practical.  At Kids Instyle Wendy will be showing the mouse table, (a beautiful mouse shaped play table featuring solid oak ears for pencil storage seen below), and the deskhouse which is a desk play table and cubby house rolled into one.  There are also matching drum stools as well. Impressive design cred here!
deskslanting-desk

This isn’t Wendy’s first foray into children’s furniture. A little more digging into her background uncovers previous dealings with award winning designs, a little closer to home...

How did you end up where you are today?
I came to Australia to set up and manage a subsidiary of a Japanese technology company. I started working for them in the Netherlands (I was born in there) setting up subsidiaries across Europe. After developing distribution channels for technology companies for many years I decided that my heart was no longer in it. I still wanted to utilise my business skills but combine that with my love for design. As I was about to move to London I saw an opportunity to promote and develop distribution channels for Australian design. I ended up with the license to manufacture and distribute the Mozzee Nest high chair.

Now that I am back living in beautiful Sydney I am doing the whole thing in reverse promoting Dutch and European design for kids to Australians.

What’s the best thing about what you do?
I love researching new products and keeping myself informed of what’s new in market. That involves travelling to international tradeshows. I also feel very energised by the prospect of a new opportunity, a new product. There is so much happening in the world of design today. Compared to say 10 years ago more creative people take the plunge and realise their concepts and commercialise them. I love being part of that process.

Right now I’m:
Eating… the first mangoes of the season
Drinking… cup of Earl Grey
Reading…Water for Elephants by Sarah Gruen (nice read!)
Hearing… Summertime by Ella Fitzgerald
Planning… 4 days sailing on Pittwater
Buying… more time…..
