Instyle: Fran Murrie, Très Divin

Monday, December 20th, 2010

It’s often the smallest details that make the biggest impact.  Fran Murrie is a ‘details’ devotee. As the director and designer of Très Divin, she offers an extensive range of inspiring ‘detailing’ goods: French inspired grosgrain ribbons, ribbon accessories, Japanese vintage style stamp sets and bakers twine.

Très Divin, was born out of a need in the market place for gorgeous packaging at affordable prices. Fran explains “What began as a retail venture has now expanded into wholesale. The business continues to evolve as we search for those little touches that make a present a true gift.”

Debuting at Life Instyle Sydney this February, we wanted to get a few more details about Fran herself!

What’s the best thing about what you do?
Having your own business is about creative drive and dedication. For me it’s a way of life. With two small children and a business to run it’s important to love what you do and I do.

Why do you exhibit at Life Instyle?
I feel Life Instyle is the quintessence of stylish products of which  I would like Très Divin to be associated with.

The Kids Corner is new to Kids Instyle in 2011, and brings it with a swag of fresh kids brands.

Nicole has deliberately carved a niche in representing middle market designer lables, striving to offer a unique offering for buyers. As she explains “We are pretty personable with our buyers and take note of what they like, their budgets and what sells. We never push big orders on buyers. If they order what they need and within their budget, they always do well and always place more orders, not to mention trust us.

We cornered Nicole to get a little more juice on The Kids Corner story… read on for more.

How did you end up where you are today?
I have a diploma in Fashion Design and Business. I was a designer for many years, then went into retail buying and styling. I had a baby a year and a half ago, then started The Kids Corner. This year in March I opened a baby & kids boutique in Bondi Beach. SO I understand the challenges of buyers, which really helps me relate to them and help them buy correctly, and alot of them have taught me things too!

What’s the best thing about what you do?
Working in fashion without the pretentiousness! There is a huge growing market in childrenswear, as well as online shopping. Their is endless opportunities out there in retail and fashion, but it is still a risky industry.

Why did you choose to exhibit at Kids Instyle?
Because it is the biggest children’s trade fair in Australia, all your buyers are in one place. You just cant put a price on it…

Right now I’m:

Instyle: Sarah Gibson, DesignByThem

Sunday, December 12th, 2010

DesignByThem is a young and vibrant design studio based in Sydney, and ‘them’ is Australian duo Nicholas Karlovasitis and Sarah Gibson. Together they create designs that are clean, experimental and combine a sense of fun with clear-cut function – their corrugated steel fruit bowl (below) a case in point.

fruitbowlCorro Bowl is made from corrugated steel, a material synonymous with the rural Australian landscape and modern Australian architecture. The bowl transforms this iconic material, accentuating its inherent strength and fluidity. Corro bowl can be used as either a fruit bowl or table centre piece. The corrugations form ideal troughs for nesting fruit.

All of their products reflect their understanding of ecodesign (which they also teach at university), as well as their commitment to local manufacturing, producing all of their products in Australia. As Sarah explains “We are passionate about Australian design and manufacturing. We believe in fostering strong collaborations within like minded people in the design, manufacturing and retail sectors.”

yellowstool

Butter stool is created from 100% post consumer recycled content, derived almost entirely from recycled milk containers. It is made from a single piece of material which when folded together can be hand assembled. The stool is stackable, comes in a large variety of colours and is suitable for indoor and outdoor use.

Exhibiting at Life Instyle in Sydney 2011 for the first time, buyers will be treated to a wide range of mainly interior products, including accessories, homewares, furniture and lighting.  Packed with innovative design, green cred and industrial strength design savvy, DesignbyThem is not to be missed.

LIS: How did you end up where you are today?
Sarah: Nick and I started DesignByThem in 2006 after graduating from Industrial Design at the University of Technology Sydney. We observed that many designers were chasing big design brands overseas and we wanted to create a platform in Australia where like minded designers could come together and produce work in a professional and commercially focused environment.

redletterbox

Inspired by the Australian suburban landscape, TomTom reflects the desire of homeowners to differentiate and customize their home on the streetscape. Made from powder-coated Zincalume, the TomTom is highly rust-resistant and uses Nylon pivots for smooth opening.

LIS: What’s the best thing about what you do?
Sarah: It would probably be all of the great people we have met. We particularly like meeting our manufactures, who in many ways are distant from the design scene but who are vital for us to create innovative and quality pieces. We’ve also met some great designers, retailers and people from design magazines that are just as passionate about design as we are.

posyholder

Posy Vase plays with the tradition of giving flowers. The vase replaces the flower wrapping allowing for the flowers to be displayed as presented. The vase rests facing the user whilst neatly framing the flowers.

Right now I’m:

Eating… All things green, spring is the perfect season for this! I also enjoy amazing Greek feasts at my partner Nick’s parent’s house – just amazing!
Drinking… Good coffee in our studio, and great vodka lime cocktails on the weekends and loving Pinot Grigio with food.
Reading… The Brain that Changes Itself – an amazing book about Neuro plasticity. Read it, it’s incredible!
Hearing… Very mixed… Fleetwood Mac, Calvin Harris, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and J.J. Cale
Planning… A big innovation and planning board in our studio, very exiting! We’ve got a million different ideas, so we’re looking forward to having a single area to display them all. In terms of up coming products, we have some great new collaborations with other Australian designers on the way, including a candle block designed by some young architects from Sydney – Stewart Hollenstein. Our most recent collaboration was the TomTom Letterbox – see attached – designed in collaboration with Tommy Cehak.
Buying… Not much really, other than herbs for my balcony. We’re crazy busy at the moment in the lead up to Christmas, but if I had time, I’d probably be buying some bike accessories. But really, I should be buying Christmas presents, if only I was that organised!
Enjoying… The spring whether and daylight saving. Great evenings out eating great food with good friends.

Instyle: Nicole McIver, Wholesale Baby

Sunday, December 5th, 2010

Kids buyers will be knocked out when they meet Nicole McIver, owner of  Wholesale Baby for the first time in Sydney this February.  She is a busy entrepreneur representing  over 35 baby, kids, maternity and parenting products.  Nicole is passionate about supporting all business’s no matter how big or small. Wholesale Baby supports many Australian companies with majority of her brands operated by work at home mums.  So if you’re in the business of growing your business by supplying products to help growing babies, you’re in luck.  Bookmark a visit to meet Nicole in Sydney and let the growth spurt begin!

Some words from Nicole…

How did Wholesale Baby start?
When I had my 2nd child in 2008 I started an online store, importing baby items from the USA that were not in Australia.  Then I realised the potential to stop retail and instead become the wholesale agent for those brands here in Australia. I slowly did that up until the start of 2010 when I though I need to do this properly. Little did I know it would turn into a full time job, with over 35 brands and hiring new staff and rapidly growing each day!

How do you find brands to represent?
The American ones that I first started with I just spent A LOT of time “googling”. Once wholesale baby started the inquiries started to role in for wholesalers needing an agent. Since then every week we have had a wholesaler ask to sign up with us so its great that we get to pick and choose which brands suit us and if we are best suited for them is also important.

What are some of the products you’re really excited to be exhibiting at Kids Instyle?
Edz Kidz Ear muff’s will be on display – the amount of parents I have call me every week needing a stockist is unbelievable – I  really need to spread awareness of this product to retailers so we can pass these sales inquiries on.  They are more popular to parents then you first would think, protecting babies and kids ear and still look cool!

earphones
Frilly Tushies is our biggest seller and EVERYONE loves them. Handmade in Australia and range expanding every month, retailers and mums are very excited for this gorgeous and affordable range.

Planning… Week ahead, visiting stores, tidying up office, getting on top of my forever growing to do list

Buying… My next expense is actually accommodation and flights to Sydney for KIS….need to look at a map, I have no idea where I am going lol
