Dan Cox Jewellery Necklace Ring Life Instyle

New to Life Instyle this year will be Dan Cox Jewellery.  Dan is a first timer to our show, and is busy making preparations for his stall (check out his blog post about all the work that goes into being part of the show here). You’ll be able to find all of Dan’s beautiful pieces in our First Instyle hall.

In the meantime you can can to know a little more about the man behind this handmade jewellery by reading on… we love that he’s inspired to create pieces that are simple, elegant, unique, lusted for, loved and salivated over!

How did you end up where you are today?
With a lot of hard work,  an extra dash of determination and a slight addiction to customer satisfaction. I knew early on in my university studies that I wanted to make jewellery my career, after my first introduction to the subject of Gold and Silversmithing. I saw a way of being able to have that creative outlet as well as eventually support myself, so I set about creating that vision and turning it into a reality. After my first major commission with the Mater Childrens Oncology Department, in seeing their joy and satisfaction with the final product, I saw how something I created could make so many people happy. Watching the joy from someone seeing their piece for the first time, whether it has been commissioned or bought from the retail range, cements for me the reasons why I make jewellery.

What’s the best thing about what you do?
I wake up every day and get to do what I love to do. I have been lucky enough to create a career path where I am happy to go to work and I can’t see myself doing anything else but this!

Why did you choose to exhibit at Life Instyle?
Life Instyle offers a fantastic opportunity for me to show the retail market my high quality products, and for the retail market to meet the maker direct and see the passion I have for what I do.

What are you looking forward to at the show?
I am a big believer in opportunities and Life Instyle offers me the perfect opportunity to network and exposes me to a new range of contacts to develop working relationships with.

What can we expect to see from you at the show?
Simplicity, elegance and variety. Retailers will have the chance to buy unique hand made pieces that their customers will love!

State of Design Dinner @ Comme

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

On Thursday evening we had the great pleasure of attending Victoria’s State of Design festival dinner at Comme in Melbourne.

Speaking at the dinner were design bloggers Lucy Feagins (Melbourne), Dan Hill (Sydney) and Mikael Colville-Andersen (Copenhagen) – all passionate bloggers, each with a unique take on design related issues.

It was great to hear from all three speakers, but we especially loved meeting Lucy Feagin, as we are long time fans of her terrific blog: The Design Files.  Lucy spends between 20-30 hours a week to deliver daily articles about the most dynamic design activity and leading designers in Australia. If you are as passionate about good design as we are, we suggest you subscribe to her blog immediately!

Sydney-based Dan Hill, publishes the City of Sound blog, which is widely regarded as one of the leading online architecture and urbanism websites, featuring recurring themes of cities, architecture, design, media and culture.

Mikael Colville-Andersen photographs chic, non-Lycra clad cyclists the world over, and his blog, Copenhagen Cycle Chic, is considered one of the top 10 fashion blogs (according to The Guardian).

Throughout the evening the bloggers touched on topics such as: bloggers as archivists and digital curators, managing public and private personas, using other social media such as twitter and facebook to support their blog, turning blogs into books (look out for Cycle Chic in print), blogs as extensions/showcases of their current careers, how blogs can lead to new divergent career opportunities (city bike lane planning consultancy), adding advertising to the blog due to demand, monetising the blog brand, evolving content and style over many years, and the compulsion to have a camera and laptop at all times!

In Style: Emese Szabo, Emeshmode Textile Design

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

Hungary. Portugal. Brisbane, Australia! Making her way across the global, Emese Szabo founder of Emeshmode Textile Design has found her spot in the sun, setting up camp to bring to the world her happy laptop and everyday bags, made largely from recycled materials.

Emese will join us at Life Instyle in Melbourne in August, for the first time in the First Instyle category – our exhibition space created to foster newly established design businesses. Make sure you drop by and say hello to this lovely lady and her playful goodies.  In the meantime, here’s a little catchup we had with her recently…

How did you end up where you are today?’
I was born in Hungary. After finishing schools there in textile/creative industry related institutions such as soft furnishing and visual merchandise, I went to study at Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, Budapest. During university studies at 2005, I had the opportunity to go to Porto, Portugal with the Erasmus Scholarship. I received my diploma as a textile designer in 2006.

I have been in Brisbane since 2007. In 2009, I finished a Certificate IV Small Business Management Course (NEIS) and established my business under the name Emeshmode Textile Design. I set up my workshop and I am working as a self-employed designer/manufacturer.

2-satchels

What’s the best thing about what you do?
Creativity, making something exciting, unusual and with this maybe cheering the people up, playing with colours, exploring the potential of the materials, being environment friendly.

Why did you choose to exhibit at Life Instyle?
Because it appears to me as a quality market where real business could happen.

2-round-bags
What are you looking forward to at the show?
Promoting my products, making contacts and getting feedback which would help me to carry on my business.

What can we expect to see from you at the show?
Few samples of my bags in different patterns and sizes.

Right now I’m:

Eating…. According to my blood type

Drinking… Non-toxic…

Reading… Nowadays mainly grant application guidelines, but I loved John Fowles: The Collector, Mikhail Bulgakov: The Master and Margarita, short novels from István Örkény, poems from György Faludy

Hearing… Jazz, fado, folk…Depeche Mode can put me in the same inspiring mood;  Baroque music is love forever, Chopin too, Aussie band like Afro Dizzi Act, Hungarian bands like Qimby which is alternative rock…Brazilian pop, Chambao, Lamb, Björk

Planning… To make different type of bags in patterns and shapes, expand my range with cloth-design

Buying… Everything what I can just get

Enjoying… Well, one of the best things is to work through a night, finish a job well and dead-tiredly fell asleep after, like one of my friend would say, who is an architect: ‘arriving home after a hard-working day and fell asleep on the floor in boots.’

Shop Instyle: Bendy St Emporium

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010

Sometimes dreams are realised in the most unexpected of times and places.  Kate Barclay had been dreaming up Bendy St Emporium for over 16 years. After settling down in Canowindra, the balloon capital of Australia four hours west of Sydney, her vision was realised.

Kate swung the doors open on her 100-year old shopfront, keen with desire to give locals and visitors an truly unique shopping experience.  Sourcing her wares from a wide variety of sources, including many Life Instyle exhibitors, Kate’s wish is “to provide customers with an experience as well as beautiful products. There is nothing better than finding a treasure, having it carefully wrapped, taking it home and indulging in a gift for oneself or loved ones if they are lucky…”

We do count ourselves as lucky to have chanced upon this gem of a store, and wanted to share a little more of Kate’s story with you.

shop-front

Tell us a little bit about Bendy St Emporium and how it was established…
Bendy Street Emporium came about after a visit many years ago to some great shops overseas.  I got sick of the trend towards franchised, cookie cutter shopping and wanted to create a space where you could get an experience not just “stuff”

I worked in retail for awhile in clothing and really enjoyed it.  I love meeting people and hearing their stories.  The benefit of being in a country town is we have more time to talk to our customers and as a result I have met some great people.

What I love about the Bendy Street Emporium is that it is always evolving, there is always something new to look at.  I really love finding something new, unique and made by designers fresh on the scene rather than stocking things you can get anywhere.

Bendy-shop

What  sets Bendy St Emporium apart from other stores?
I think it is the overall feel of the shop.  People love visiting and they don’t feel they have to buy something, there is genuine enjoyment from just being there.  I don’t stick to any retail rules.  If we want to stop for wine and a cheese plate on a Wednesday then we will.  I like to keep the windows fresh and a bit quirky.  For Mother’s Day we had a big “Mother” loveheart tattoo in the window that my mother made for me (she was a commercial artist and a very handy asset).  The thrill was when the principal of the local Catholic school came to the shop to borrow the Mother tattoo for their church procession.

I welcome artists to show their work on available wall space if I have it and this brings another element to the atmosphere that just fuels creativity and enjoyment.

But the biggest thing I find from the feedback I have had is that people are discovering things they haven’t seen before or haven’t seen in ages. They come across it and it was something dear to them when they were growing up. We have wooden yoyos and cats cradle string kits which have sold really well and 90% went to adults reminiscing.

I also welcome mums and dads with kids.  I have a play pen in a corner of the shop with a gate so kids can play safely while parents shop.  The shop has plenty of room for prams and there are no dirty looks when kids come in. I have three kids of my own so I know that some days you just need 5 minutes
to look at something without having to chase a toddler.

Customer service is so important and it goes beyond “can I help you?”.  I enjoy my customers and get a thrill when I see them using a product they have bought from me.  It rained the other day and I saw one of my beautiful French umbrellas being proudly carried down the street.  This particular lady had been dying for it to rain just so she could use it – fantastic!

What are your favourite products from Life Instyle exhibitors in the store right now?
I love the ceramics and wooden pieces from Attia, especially their cup and saucer sets.  They are so delicate but still functional.

Attia-pieces

Love by Geneine Honey has been hugely popular and it was so good to get their stock after they had been washed out by the storms in Melbourne. Definitely worth the wait.

Memi Designs is beautiful and I am on my second order from them and will be catching up in Melbourne for more.  Beautifully made and the lavender used in the heat packs is amazing.

Why do you choose to attend Life Instyle?
I like that the focus of the suppliers is quality over quantity.  It is not a mass produced mentality and you can find some great individual pieces.  It is also great to see so many fair trade products as well.  No two stands are the same and in most cases you get to speak to the designer themselves which allows you to really get an affinity for the product which in turn makes it easy to sell because you believe in it.

What do you look for in products when selecting new season stock for your store?
Originality and quality.

Right now I’m…

Eating… Ligurian olives with chilli and garlic – like lollies

Drinking… Hamilton’s Bluff 2004 Sangiovese – way too easy to drink.

Reading… Wuthering Heights

Hearing… Sylvie Boisel, a great French singer coming to perform in store for me next week.

Planning… Bastille Day celebrations in the shop and my trip to Melbourne.

Buying… Art and plants for my garden.  Also looking for suppliers of aprons, crockery and beach towels among many other things.

Enjoying… Going to work.  I love putting the key in the door and putting the bike out the front of the shop and getting settled before going next door and poking my head in the door and having a coffee put in my hand (because in the country everyone knows your name and that you have your coffee with one sugar) then going back to the shop to play.

TOP PICK: UBABUB @ KIDS INSTYLE

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Exhibiting exclusively at Kids Instyle this August is the most stylish and modern kids furniture we’ve seen in a while.  Ubabub is the creation of designers turned parents Natasha & Daniel Dumais who noticed a distinct lack of nursery furniture to suit their contemporary taste.

Pod_Cot_Angled_Mattress Down

The Ubabub designs are available in three ranges, The Pod (pictured above), The Nifty and a selection of nursery artwork.  The clean modern lines are boosted by the durable acrylic panels, providing clear visibility and air flow, allowing parents to keep an eye on sleeping little ones with minimal disturbance.

nifty_clear_cot_sideUbabub

The entire Ubabub range is created from the highest quality, renenwable and recyclable materials making them durable and ecologically friendly!  These unique nursery pieces are the ideal choice for the modern, discerning parents of truly urban tots.  Retailers and buyers can view the entire Ubabub range exclusively at Kids Instyle this August or view the  range online at their website.
