In Style: Jo Luping, Jo Luping Design

Monday, June 14th, 2010

If you are going to Life Instyle in Melbourne this August, a visit Jo Luping Design is a must.  A long time exhibitor at Life Instyle, Jo Luping designs and produces art pieces (ceramics, jewellery and art) that are easy to love. Handcrafted in her studio in New Zealand, Jo strives to bring together ideas from all over the world to produce unique products within a sustainable and profitable company framework.

Here is the story behind Jo’s products, an insight into her design philosophy and what she has instore at the next Life Instyle show.

Ceramic bowls: I use design as a platform to tell a story. The story will raise awareness about an environmental issue and highlight natures beauty. Each piece made is a conservation conversation. This collection of ceramic bowls feature line drawings. Drawing is how I interpret and transform the environment into works of art.

behind-the-scenesMaintaining an environment that is creative, upbeat and happy, where staff feel like they belong and are supported in their own artistic endeavours is high on the agenda for Jo.

Each ceramic bowl is lovingly handcrafted in our studio using the finest quality stoneware clay and glazed witha food safe glaze so you can gain pleasure from both form and function.

Ceramic Jewellery: This collection of ceramic jewellery is inspired by the smooth round organic shaped pebbles found on Makara beach. Each piece is made from a naturally coloured stoneware clay, formed into ceramic pebbles and hand bound.

Sterling Jewellery: Each of the pieces are miniature works of art and have been influenced by the treasures of the Russian Imperial Court. The jewellery is made from white gold leaf, sterling silver, cold enamel, glass beads and shell pearls. Stark, heavily contrasted images of plant life have been incorporated on all the piece and continue the theme of bringing stories of the natural environment into the designs.

How did you end up where you are today?
I started my company Jo Luping Design Ltd as soon as I finished art school and design school. I started part-time as I also worked in the film industry as a camera operator. Five years ago I made a choice to concentrate on just the design business. Since then I have expanded my product range from just ceramic tiles to making jewellery, art prints and textiles.

What’s the best thing about what you do?
I love the fact that I can transform an idea into a finished piece. Seeing the journey from initial concept drawings through to a physical product is always exciting. The design process is constantly challenging the way I think and stretching my imagination.

When did you start exhibiting at Life Instyle?
2005

Why do you exhibit at Life Instyle?
It is quite simply the best show on offer. I tried the other options at the same time as a comparison but the results were definitely better at Life In Style. The concept of “family” is also very important to me and I like the fact that Thibaud and Claire are like extensions of my working family.

What has been your Life Instyle highlight?
Our last show in Melbourne was really successful and the atmosphere or “buzz” was strong. There is a strong collaborative or family approach amongst the exhibitors and our stockists which grows stronger every year. I was also introduced to some pretty amazing Thai restaurants which is always a bonus.

What can we expect from you at the next show?
I am currently working on a range of jewellery that incorporates beautiful emeralds and sapphires but still setting them in a contemporary setting. I am interested in really providing something engaging, versatile and beautiful. I have also started to play with my glass kiln and am looking forward to seeing the finished pieces.

Right now I’m:

Eating….Chicken soup and Fish curries. Not at the same time. Both are warming for the winter months. I read in the latest Mindfood magazine that chicken soup has been proven to have antibacterial and antiviral properties. Fish curries are just yummy. It is also Bluff Oyster season and my in-laws brought up 4 dozen oysters in the weekend which only five of us could eat as the others were pregnant or didn’t like them. How sad.

Drinking… Mt Difficulty Pinot Noir. If you haven’t tried it you just have to.

Reading…Hopeful Monsters” by Nicholas Mosley

Hearing… I am a bit ashamed to say that I am listening to an awful amount of The Wiggles.

Planning… To spend more time drawing and painting.

Buying… I am saving my pennies to buy a roller mill for jewellery making. I know this might not sound that exciting but I am very excited about the possibility of rolling textures into metals.

Enjoying...
Sharing meals with friends, reading books and spending time with my family.

In Style: Rebecca Besson-Sharra, Sharra Grow

Monday, June 14th, 2010

As the name suggests, Sharra Grow is very much about growth – of a product range, of a business and of a family. Rebecca Beeson-Sharra and her husband Ermal have crafted a holistic lifestyle that allows them to combine wholesaling ethically made, eco-friendly gorgeous children’s products from home in South West WA, with raising three young children.

Sharra Grow Kids Instyle

Sharra Grow have the exclusive distribution of  eeBoo New York games, puzzles, stationery and decoration, and Apple Baby Maternity jewellery.  Each product selected by Rebecca is designed to inspire children (and their parents!) to play imaginatively and creatively.

On a recent sales trip to Melbourne, we touched base with Rebecca to get the low down on Sharra Grow’s roots.

How did you end up where you are today?
My parents have always been involved in wholesale import, distribution and agency representation of beautiful product. They inspired all of us to fulfill our lives with the balance that self employment allows. I also have a wonderful husband who is my partner and best friend. Working together allows us to deal with the seperations sometimes necessary in small business knowing that the other is 100% supportive and is keeping the home fires burning… literally.

Sharra Grow at Life Instyle

What’s the best thing about what you do?
Our three children are central to our lives so the best part of our business is being able to sell product that we believe in and that we use with our children on a daily basis and the ability to work from home! We are also fortunate that by selling great product, we get great customers who are always a pleasure to deal with.

When did you start exhibiting at Kids Instyle?
We joined Kids Instyle 3 years ago.

Why do you exhibit at Kids Instyle?
We spent several years exhibiting with the larger gift industry mainstays and were constantly frustrated by the politics and their lack of contact and assistance. Kids Instyle  allows us to maintain a great customer base of like-minded retailers and allows us to concentrate on them rather than servicing a broad retail market that doesn’t necessarily “get” our product ranges.
Sharra Grow at Life Instyle

What has been your Kids Instyle highlight?
Apart from the obvious – great sales results, we love being involved in a fair that is so visually stunning – meeting our loyal regular customers in the flesh as well as wandering about meeting other exhibitors are always highlights.

eeboo-canvas-2 Sharra Grow Kids Instyle

What can we expect from you at the next show?
Beautiful new product from our regular suppliers – new eeBoo including their first range of greeting cards for children and beautiful new metallic art supplies, new birdlife rattles and bibs from Bimbi and a hopefully a couple of new ranges that are still in the pipeline!

eeboo-canvas-3 Sharra Grow Kids Instyle

Right now I’m: Sitting in my room at the stunning new Cullen Art Series Hotel in Melbourne skyping my kids– what a hotel – who knew a sales trip could be so glamorous!

Rebecca from Sharra Grow at Life Instyle

(Rebecca as photographed by son, Gabriel)

Eating… In the last week, too much plane food, but generally my husband’s great pastas.

Drinking… Post baby so able to indulge in vino again – a good sem sav in never far from the fridge especially Skuttlebutt by Stella Bella Vineyard in Margaret River.

Reading… “How Proust can change your life”  by Alain de Botton and too many magazines & blogs!! Design SpongeSFGirl by Bay, etc… the list is endless…

Hearing...
I have a weakness for Italian pop music like Alex Britti & Marco Masini – I spent some of my 20’s in Italy, met & married my husband there, and the music always carries great memories for me.

Planning… Planning for the August fair – sourcing new product and working on some new stand ideas.

Buying… Product and samples ready for August Life Instyle, a rocket for our 4-year old, Ayrton and Pokemon cards for Gabriel (8)- I won’t be able to leave Melbourne without them!!!

Enjoying… our beautiful new baby girl, Benicia, getting back to country life in Bridgetown, South West WA and the joy of watching our boys relishing the fresh air, space and great people that come with it!

Be part of the Sharra Grow family this August at Kids Instyle in Melbourne.

In Style: Peta O’Neill, Mae

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

meetmae2Mae is the lovechild of three lovely ladies – Bec, Peta and Emily. The trio make sweet fabric wall decals and mini stickers from their studio in Northern NSW.  Peta O’Neill is Mae’s sales director, and when she’s not planning Mae’s beautiful stand for the next Kids Instyle show in Melbourne this August, she may just be sipping a drop of red while chilling out to Gil Scott Heron.

Build-a-Tree-Twitters-Male-WEB

Peta kindly allowed us to digger a little deeper on Mae’s birth story and plans for her future…

How did you end up where you are today?
Through a crazy course of events the three of us met and I suppose  we seized the moment… we never intended to do childrens wall  stickers, in fact we got together with the idea of doing wallpaper, cushions and lampshades. Which is why mae’s designs are heavily based on patterns. The crazy thing is how quickly it all  happened, before we knew it we had some stockists … 12months later we still pinch ourselves.

Dinosaurs-WEB

What’s the best thing about what you do?
Being able to work with  Bec and Em, they truly are amazing at what they do… and in a  childlike way, working for ourselves is so dreamy! I must admit  too I really love the feedback we get… I still can’t believe that people get such joy out of our products.

Forest-Critters-for-Girls-WEB

When did you start exhibiting at Kids Instyle?
In August 2009 in Melbourne.

Why do you exhibit at Kids Instyle?
Because we love it on so many levels… but to be more articulate I’d have to say because its filled with quality products and attracts all of the best stockists.

What has been your Kids Instyle highlight?
We’ve had such a wonderful time at both the tradeshows we’ve done (Melbourne and Sydney) but I’d have to pick a moment from Melbourne our first show. Ha, you know I do remember arriving back from the first day with our arms full of orders… the long one… and looking at each other and saying ’so that is what you do at tradeshows’… we were a bit naive! Still are really.

What can we expect from you at the next show?
We truly hope to have the most delightful stall with some new goodies for our stores to fall in love with.

Winter-Doll-WEB

Right now I’m… I’m curled up on my bed,  my partner is out and my little girls are asleep and I’m having a ‘me’ moment… a rare treat!!

Eating… Home made banana bread cupcakes that both my little girls helped me make… you should have seen the mess! We are a bit rusty on the baking side of things since the start of Mae.

Drinking…Well I would love to say some sort of fresh juice that I concoct every morning but alas who can beat a good red wine… Vintage Cellar Release 2008 Pinot from Central Otago. HHmm yummy!!

Reading… I’ve just started Papillon by Henri Charriere… in fact  I’ve only read the introduction.

Hearing… During the last bit of rain I found my love again for Gil Scott Heron’s album Spirits… goes great with that red I mentioned.

Planning… A quick adventure in London. I can’t wait!! A few days with some old mates and a few days of Bubble.

Buying… Winter clothes for my girls… even though I need them more. Paper Wings for my little actress and Munster for my wee tomboy because their stuff is just way too cool!!

Enjoying… The pace of country living to balance the fact that I’ve become a workaholic!

Check out Mae’s fantastic website, blog and free downloadable goodies – and then see them in all their beauty at Kids Instyle in Melbourne this August.

In Style: Leonie Tonner, ICI ET LA

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

A happy wander through Surry Hills four years ago saw Leonie Tonner’s design career turn a corner from stationery to interior and retail design.  She now has the delightful job of working both the front of house and production side of ICI ET LA, importers of French antiques, furniture and collectibles.

chairs

You may also recognise ICI ET LA’s expansive and colorful range of French Striped Canvases which are also imported for deckchairs and upholstery and are sold to retail outlets, and used for domestic and commercial applications (see Melbourne’s Rooftop Cinema for example). ICI ET LA also designs and produces locally a new industrial furniture range in zinc and steel, as well as a selection of brightly colored stools.

zinc-tables

Recently Leonie took a moment to fill us in how she’s travelling, the businesses’ involvement with Life Instyle and her favourite red of the season.

What’s the best thing about what you do?
What comes to mind is all the talents I meet who contribute to the process of developing new projects. I really find exciting each time a new design is finally achieved and that reflects this interaction of creativity and passion.

Also, I enjoy receiving the new antiques coming from France and trying to find the right place for each piece in our show room. Each time it’s like a ‘little Christmas day’ for all of us, and it is a pleasure to see the furniture Andrew had chosen in typical French markets and ‘brocantes’ arriving here, in the heart of Surry Hills.

When did you start exhibiting at Life Instyle?
ICI ET LA first exhibited in 2003 and then again in 2004 when the fair first started.

Why do you exhibit at Life Instyle?
Life Instyle is in our opinion one of the best fairs in our business field, regarding the care given to the design and the organisation. We are impressed by the accuracy and efficiency of all the friendly crew from Life Instyle. Another agreeable aspect to me is also meeting the other exhibitors and appreciating the quality and variety of their own selections.

What has been your Life Instyle highlight?
This is the first time I am managing ICI ET LA’s space at Life Instyle. It is really exciting to recreate ICI ET LA’S atmosphere at this event through a selection of our most representative pieces.

What can we expect from you at the next show?
Andrew and our designer Saul are always coming up with new concepts and designs. I am sure we will have many new items to present for this event too.

Right now I’m… Waiting for dinner as my boyfriend is kindly cooking for me tonight.

Reading… I am a bit late, I know, everybody has read it long ago: I just started ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’ by Stieg Larsson … on my wish list (after the trilogy) I have also ‘The Elegance of the Hedgehog’ by Muriel Barbery, which seems really good too.

Eating… French Cheese “Delice Bourgogne” white mould triple cream – an indulgence for any time of the day!

Drinking… I found a really nice red wine the Zenato Vapolicella Veneto, it’s my little crush for the moment.

Hearing… Rumors about the Biennale of Sydney, saying it is really good. I can tell you it’s not only a rumor, I really loved the exhibition at the MCA.

Planning:… To get through the 3 cd’s of my French lessons one day maybe and a trek into the Blue Mountains soon.

Buying… Mostly electricity and sometimes a nice piece of cheese!

Leopic2

Enjoying… Right now ? ‘Changing places’ of Tord Gustavsen Trio.

Meet Leonie and maybe have a bite of cheese at Life Instyle in Melbourne in August 2010.

In Style: Jane Lo, Via Alley

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

Ben_Jane
Jane Lo, is the sales and marketing brain behind Via Alley, an Australian distributor of beautifully design items from around the world.  After a decade of working in marketing for funds managers, Jane escaped corporate headquarters, to focus her passion on instilling a bit of creativity into the people she meets everyday.

objects-collageVia Alley represents an eclectic mix of designer goods, and came into existence out of admiration for artists and designers who devote their brains to beautiful things. As Jane explains “We want to highlight not just the end product but also the creative individuals who came up with the idea in the first place. We want people to be surrounded by beautiful and smart items as they go about their daily business.”

Untitled-1

Via Alley will be exhibiting at the upcoming show in Melbourne in August, and we caught up with them recently to find out what they’re upto…

When did you start exhibiting at LIS?
We first did it a couple of years ago, but the Sydney event earlier this year and the Melbourne show in August is the first time we’ve exhibited consecutively.

Why do you exhibit at Life Instyle?
LIS is an edited and selective tradeshow, which means the people who come through the door have similar value as what our brand represents and from what I’ve seen, our fellow exhibitors share the same passion as well, so we feel LIS is a great fit for us.

What has been your LIS highlight?
Meeting new people! There is always so much to learn from different people. It’s just as exciting to hear from people who are starting out as is listening to stories from those who have been in the industry for a long time.

Right now I’m:

Eating…. sushi

Drinking… a weak latte

Reading… monocle magazine

Hearing… Florence + The Machine

Planning… LIS in August of course!

Buying… lots of socks for winter

Enjoying… the crisp winter air

Check out the the Via Alley website here: www.viaalley.com.au, and see them at Life Instyle in Melbourne this August.

Architect turned European toy importer.  Hardly the career path Liz James, Director of
Play Imports Pty Ltd would have predicted for herself.  Yet eight years ago while in Paris shopping for her newly arrived twin granddaughters, Liz’s future was about to undertake a somewhat whimsical transformation.

Becoming fascinated by toys, Liz and her daughter opened a toy shop in Merimbula, importing many brands directly from Europe.  The business grew and Liz left the stress of architectural practice to work full time in the family’s burgeoning toy importing business.

Petitcolin-collage

Play Imports is now the Australian name behind such brands as Moulin Roty (France) – theme based soft toys & accessories, wooden toys and children’s play furniture, Vilac (France) – lacquered wooden and traditional toys, Petitcollin (France) – collectable traditional dolls, play dolls & accessories and  Kellner Steckfiguren (Germany) – quirky characters made from interlocking wooden pieces.

Play Imports philosophy is represent products that side-step mass consumerism to offer treasures that will be loved generation after generation.

Kellner-collage

Liz recently took a few moments to share her thoughts about Kids Instyle and what she’s up to…

What’s the best thing about what you do?

When did you start exhibiting at Kids Instyle?

Why do you exhibit at Kids Instyle?
Because the focus is on design excellence and they have a very professional approach to everything they do.

Right now I’m:
